Barton house tenants have been notified by Bristol City Council that their water supply is at risk of Legionella contamination.
Tenants at the Barton House tower block were evacuated on the 14th November, due to the risk of Legionella in the blocks water system, that could lead to Legionnaires’ disease. The council stated that the block was at risk of Legionella build up in flats that were vacant and where water was stagnant.
Legionella bacteria thrives in stagnant water, where nutrients can assist its growth. Areas where rust and other natural food sources are more at risk of Legionella growth. Legionella risk assessments should outline any potential risk zones for the bacteria and allow you to put measures in place to reduce exposure.
Since the councils initial warning and evacuation, many tenants have now returned to their homes and been advised to run the stagnated water through their taps and showers, to clear the water from the system, that would have been sat for some time.
